LAstyle too ‘precious’?

February 6, 2008

Interesting. Some days ago i met some people who’re dancing more cuban style. They told me that there was a kind of ‘taboo’ in their circle of (dancing) friends towards LAstyle salsa, saying that style is much too precious, too manieristic (if that word exists in English), exageratedly delicate. Strange to hear that (as the style we are supposed to dance is LAstyle …), also because i would associate those adjectives more with the NYstyle … So it’s again the typically human situation of A not liking B, B not liking C, etc … I for myself have my own tastes but i think there are interesting things in the different styles, that you can take to make something ‘your own’. Am I even dancing LAstyle? Well, I’m dancing on1, yes, true, and i’m mostly dancing on a line, that’s true too. But for the rest? Watching a video on YouTube (that Jan Franssen posted) presenting LAstyle salsa (with for instance the Vazquez brothers who are supposed to be the ‘founders’ of the LAstyle), I must say i don’t recognize too much … So are we then just dancing ’salsa’? On 1?

practise moments

February 6, 2008

Monday we had (for now) our last practise moment in Sportoase. I must say i liked the spirit of it. Apparently more and more people appreciated that too as there were more people week after week. I liked the ‘working spirit’, simply trying, repeating, talking. On parties you usually don’t do that (and it’s also better like that, parties are for dancing, not for ‘working’). I liked the fact that there were advanced, beginners, undefined (just joking) all together, you always learn from dancing with new people (“Hey, this move worked with everyone i know, why doesn’t it work with this girl?” and things like that). An open atmosphere i would say. So if i’ll get the chance to organize other practise sessions, I will (and i will let you know of course).
Greetings,
Carl
